The Historical Mystery: The Message Beneath Pompeii
When Lucius discovers a wax writing tablet beneath loose tesserae in Livia’s shop, the mysterious message appears to warn of unusual events around Pompeii.
With help from Livia, Marcus the mosaic builder, and Cassian the city guard, Lucius investigates the tablet’s origins. A workshop mark, broken leather tie, and traces of mortar become important clues.
As the investigation unfolds, students learn to distinguish evidence from assumptions and discover why a mysterious message does not necessarily represent a deliberate warning or a prediction of the future.
The story introduces historical details about Roman construction, mosaics, writing tools, earthquake damage, and life in Pompeii before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Historical Accuracy Note: The setting, Roman technologies, earthquake history, and eruption are based on historical information. The characters and central mystery are fictional. The resource explicitly distinguishes these elements.
